HP Mini 1120NR aka the linux version

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

EEE PC Blog has an interesting article about the Linux version of the Mini 1000, If you are waiting for the linux version you’ll have to wait a bit longer. The HP Mini 1120NR will not be shipping until January but good things come to those who wait as the starting price point of the 1120NR is said to be $379.99 not a great discount but it could be worse. One thing to bare in mind is that HP has put a lot into developing their “Mobile Internet Experience Software” coupled with the price breaks for Windows XP UMPC edition could explain the less than impressive price difference.

HP Mini 1000 compared to the MiniNote 2133

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Comparing The HP Mini 1000 to the HP 2133 is not really a great idea as they are both aimed at different ends of the market, but I do think that it is fair to mentions some of the areas that the mini 1000 has improved in. One example is the linux distro that the HP Mini 1120NR comes, I think that it’s fair to say the HP seem to have learned their lesson as they have provided an online software upgrade path with this new version of linux, which was absent from the SLED 10 Linux that came with the HP 2133. They Have also spent alot of time customising the Interface on the HP Mini 1120NR, it seems that HP has done something the many large companies fail to do, listen to the customers.

On the hardware side of things, They Have gone with an Atom processor which allows them to use Intel’s 945 graphic chipset. Many have welcomed this change, one thing that alot of people seem upset about is the fact that they have decided against an aluminium case but with the promise of a new revision of the HP 2133 in 2009, this really isn’t that much of an issue. Here are some comparision pictures for you;

2Go PC mini-notebook, HP Mini-Note, ASUS EEE. Typeoff

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Over the past few days, pcmag has been running some tests, to find out which one of the UMPCs out their is best for typing on and they have crowned the mini-note is the winner. With a nice big keyboard like that was their really any doubt? heres a short video;

UTube

So seems if you want to get reports or articles written on the move the mininote is the best tool for the job. So the mini-note might wind up being being popular with journalists given the keyboard and it’s connectivity options wifi /express card (3g, etc). Thats off course if they every release the mini-note into markets other than education, this test shows that the hp2133 has some significant advantages in the education market.

mini-note at newegg.com

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

well, this is old news but forum user wrbuckjr reported the mini note is available with fast shipping from newegg.com, you’ll still have to wait if you are in europe or if you want the linux version as it soldout fairly quickly. If you must have the hp2133 now, their are sellers on ebay shipping internationally, quite expensive…

Linux on the MiniNote.

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

It’s been quite an eventful week as far as linux on the mini-note is concerned, violajack reports that “3d effects” works on suse linux which has been confirmed by others and progress has been made on getting ubuntu 8.04 to work correctly it’s variants should work using a similar if not identical method thanks to kaffeboy who wrote an article on the wiki about this, and other forum members for looking into this. A day-zero recovery image is available to owners of the hp2133 Thanks to MikeZ and other posters on the netbookuser.com forums for this. A Gentoo installation disk/live cd which supports the mininote will soon be released(I’m assuming that it supports the wireless device to allow downloading of stage tarballs, etc? more to come on this). Without things like fastinit and the simpleui (simple mode) offered by the EEEPC their is nothing keeping you from trying other distros on the miniunote and the HDD also allows lots of room for dual boot options.
